If you can’t make it to your favorite marathon then bring the marathon to you. That was the basic thinking of United States Army Captain Ivan Hurlburt who was serving in Afghanistan with fellow soldiers from the 25th Infantry Division based in Hawaii. As runners, they dreamed of being at home, running the Honolulu Marathon but knew that wasn’t possible. That’s how the first marathon in Afghanistan came to be.
