Ray Cronise: On Weight Loss, His ‘Metabolic Winter’ Hypothesis, and Solving Obesity

June 24, 2014
-:--

Ray Cronise spent 15 years at NASA but after gaining weight his life took a different path when he sought solutions to achieve personal weight loss. His background in science led him to study the human body’s nutritional and caloric energy balance, and how to drive weight loss through basic thermodynamic principles. He now operates a popular blog, hypothermics.com.

On this show we learn a bit more about Ray’s background and weight-loss success strategy, then we dive into the latest on nutrition science and caloric energy balance including:

-Recently published work by Ray, David Sinclair and Andrew Bremer: “The ‘Metabolic Winter’ Hypothesis: A Cause of the Current Epidemics of Obesity and Cardiometabolic Disease” (click for full paper), which presents …”a novel way to view the major food macronutrients and human diet in this era of excessive caloric consumption, along with a novel relationship among calorie scarcity, mild cold stress, and sleep that may explain the increasing prevalence of nutritionally related diseases.”
-Definition of “metabolic winter”
-Why proteins, carbohydrates, and fats (macronutrients) are somewhat irrelevant in Ray’s argument
-Evolution of human’s relationship with food and how it’s changed over time — for the worse
-Why “eat less, move more” doesn’t matter, and why obesity is about diet (intake) and not exercise (energy expenditure)
-Fasting, and Ray’s take on going without food
-The psychology of food and eating

Plus even more:

-Making science more available to the public, and why and how Ray made it possible to provide Open Access to his latest published review (and the $3,200 price tag)
-His must-have scientific journals, including New Scientist Magazine and Nature
-The current state of blogging and who you should and can trust as “experts”
Seth Godin
-Recent Dr. Oz upset on miracle weight loss

This is some good info. I ran across a Diabetic All natural diet product that lowers blood sugar levels. My dad started taking about 2 months ago and has lost a total of 32 lbs and he is no longer on insulin. I thank the people who made this product for giving my father his life back. The product is called Skinny Fiber and it even stopped the spasms he was having and the burning in his feet. It detox’s the body and cleans out all parasites. It gave my dad natural energy. A truly amazing product. He didnt change his diet or excercise and he dropped the weight. Woww. The website is http://www.thisisskinnyfiber.com Thank you and good luck

DId anyone understand any of this? I heard a lot of gibberish and can’t even tell you what his main point was.

Very interesting. I like the common sense approach to these problems and the simple solutions.

Normally really enjoy the interviews and think Tawnee is a great interviewer, but this guy seemed to go off at odd tangents, and yes, didn’t really know what his point was apart from – to lose weight, don’t eat.

I thought this seemed an odd concept as I thought we put on weight in winter and if we didn’t eat, as our bodies would store more fat, believing it didn’t know when the next meal would be.

Also, with a chap at work with his daughter in hospital as she’s not been eating, it seems this is poor advice.

Was he saying you could survive on just water?, as long as you sat doing nothing. So how do we earn a living (if we don’t have a blog and ask for people to send us money)

I read the entire “The ‘‘Metabolic Winter’’ Hypothesis” today and it was a summary of 200 years of research on foodstuff, energy and nutrients. Nothing new or exciting. The conclusion is that we should stay cold to increase energy expenditure? I’m glad I didn’t have to pay for it.

  • He kept saying that over eating leads to obesity and I would argue that the 801010, or raw till 4 crowd eat way too many calories but they still look amazing without exercising much.

  • I get together with tons of folks without eating.

  • But look at winter in the tropics? They have fruit even then. Apples grow great in the winter as well.

  • You want to break your fast especially after you workout. Again, if I didn’t want to perform then I just would never eat, just run on starvation. Lol, lets see him go run a 100mi race on nothing… will see if it “helps” him.

  • Need to get Ben, Ray, Dr. Esselstyn, Dr. McDougall on together, and see how he fairs then.

  • Lets see him keep training on that Extreme Fasting. Heck he could choose, like 5k training or 100mi training, and will see how well it doesn’t affect him.

  • Again, its not about extremes, but its about performance on this podcast.

  • Again lets see him run a 100mi race (obviously he wouldn’t do well as a nutrionist for a olympic or high performing athlete), and then tell the guys like Zack Bitter and Rob Krar that they should stop eating and they would be fine.

  • Isn’t what he’s promoting is Anorexia?

And there are no people out there buying ads for fruit…so what are the fruit people selling?

  • […] Cold Therapy – We address the recent and unfortunate cryotherapy chamber death. What’s up with these extreme cold chambers, and are there better/easier/safer ways to get the benefits of cold therapy? – Why you DO want a little cold exposure in your life, but extremes aren’t necessary. – Ray Cronise talking cold thermogenesis and weight loss on EP!
